Xi Jinping Meets with Speaker of the House of Representatives of Japan

On May 4, 2012, Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping met with Yokomichi Takahiro, speaker of the House of Representatives of Japan, at the Great Hall of the People.

Xi extended welcome for Yokomichi Takahiro's visit to China on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the normalization of diplomatic relations between the two countries. He said over the past 40 years, the Sino-Japanese relations have made ​​significant progress in the political, economic, trade, cultural and other aspects, laying a solid foundation for longer-term development of bilateral relations. The two nations should step up their dialogue among governmental departments, political parties and parliaments to build up political trust. Both sides should continue to earnestly conduct people-to-people exchanges in a bid to increase mutual understanding and promote friendly feelings between both peoples, Xi told Takahiro. The vice president also suggested the two sides should appropriately handle sensitive issues and maintain the overall situation of bilateral relations based on the "four political documents" as well as the consensus reached by both sides. Xi called on the people of insight from various circles in Japan to take a long-term perspective, shoulder the responsibility, take positive actions and make greater contributions to promoting the further development of Sino-Japanese strategic and mutually beneficial relationship.

Xi said that this year is a significant year for China's implementation of its "12th Five-Year Plan". China will make progress while maintaining stability, and will continue to comprehensively implement the scientific concept of development and strive to maintain stable and rapid economic growth. Xi said China would adhere to the path of peaceful development and is willing to share its growth with other countries, including Japan, and achieve common prosperity.

Echoing Xi's views, Takahiro said since the normalization of Japan-China diplomatic ties 40 years ago, bilateral relations have witnessed rapid development thanks to the efforts by generations of leaders and nationals of the two countries. Looking to the future, Japan is ready to work with China to further promote personnel exchanges, strengthen communication and cooperation in security and other areas and promote in-depth development of strategic and mutually beneficial relationship based on the four political documents, to contribute to the peace, stability and growth in Asia and the world.
