Xi Jinping Meets with US President's Special Representatives Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner
2012/05/03

In the evening of May 3, 2012, Vice President Xi Jinping met in Diaoyutai State Guesthouse with US President Barack Obama's special representatives Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner who were in Beijing attending the fourth round of the China-US Strategic and Economic Dialogue (S&ED).

Xi said that the S&ED has become an important and effective platform between China and the US to cultivate mutual trust, deepen cooperation and manage differences. He wishes this round of S&ED every success and expects it to further drive forward China-US relations.

He stressed that the important consensus of President Hu Jintao and President Obama to build China-US cooperative partnership based on mutual respect and mutual benefit points out the direction and establishes principles for both sides to explore the road of new relationship between major powers. To build a new type of relationship, China and the US, as two major powers with different political system, historical and cultural background and level of economic development, should have not only the determination and confidence as described in the saying that "he who has never been to the Great Wall is not a true man" but also the patience and wisdom of "crossing the river by feeling the stones". The two sides should continuously enhance mutual understanding and trust, deepen mutually beneficial and win-win cooperation, step up coordination and collaboration on major regional and international issues and strengthen friendship between the two peoples. 2012 is a crucial year to the China-US relations. He hopes the two sides focus on the whole picture and take a long-term perspective, remove interferences and work together to safeguard and promote the healthy and stable development of China-US relations.

Clinton noted that the two sides conducted sincere and in-depth exchanges, achieved major progress and put the spirit of partnership into practices during this round of S&ED. The building of US-China cooperative partnership based on mutual respect and mutual benefit is an unprecedented endeavor. It is indeed like "crossing the river by feeling the stones". The river is sometimes calm and sometimes rough. The two sides should adhere to dialogue, expand exchanges, enhance mutual trust, narrow down differences and strengthen cooperation to cope with various risks and challenges.

Geithner noted that the world economy still faces great uncertainty and the fiscal and financial reform including the RMB exchange rate reform being implemented by China is encouraging. The US hopes to strengthen coordination and cooperation with China to jointly promote the development of bilateral economic and trade relations and boost global economic recovery.

Vice Premier Wang Qishan, State Councilor Dai Bingguo, Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi, Minister of Finance Xie Xuren and Chinese Ambassador to the US Zhang Yesui were present at the meeting.
