On February 28, 2012, Vice President Xi Jinping met with visiting Sudanese Foreign Minister Ali Ahmed Karti at the Great Hall of the People.
China and Sudan have supported and treated each other sincerely since forging diplomatic ties over half a century ago, Xi said, adding that in recent years both countries have maintained frequent high-level contacts, increased political trust and made fruitful achievements in multiple areas including economy, trade and energy. The current China-Sudan relations have achieved sustained development and China is willing to work with Sudan to push forward the friendly cooperative relations between the two countries. Xi said he hopes Sudan will take concrete measures to ensure the safety of Chinese organizations and personnel in Sudan. Xi said differences between Sudan and South Sudan have recently led to disputes, drawing attention from the international community and raising China's concerns. China hopes the two sides can carry forward the spirit of mutual understanding and accommodation, remain patient and conduct active negotiation, keeping in mind their fundamental interests and the overall regional situation, Xi said. He hopes Sudan and South Sudan will properly solve their differences at an early date.
Echoing Xi's comments on bilateral ties, Karti said China is a trustworthy friend of the people of Sudan, and Sudan appreciates the long-term support and assistance extended by China. Sudan will take all necessary measures to protect the safety of Chinese organizations and personnel in Sudan. Sudan is willing to work with China to promote the development of bilateral friendly cooperative relations. On relations between Sudan and South Sudan, he said his country will adhere to a peaceful path and solve differences with South Sudan through negotiations.
Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi attended the meeting.
