Wang Yi: China Proposes to Build China-Myanmar Economic Corridor
2017/11/20

On November 19, 2017 local time, when jointly meeting the press with State Counsellor and Foreign Minister Aung San Suu Kyi of Myanmar in Nay Pyi Taw, Foreign Minister Wang Yi said that China has proposed to build a Y-shaped China-Myanmar Economic Corridor, forming an overall cooperation pattern with three-end support and of tripartite confrontation.

Wang Yi said that China views Myanmar as an important partner in jointly building the "Belt and Road." The two countries have great potential for cooperation with obvious complementary advantages. In order to consolidate China-Myanmar comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership and deepen practical cooperation, China is willing to work with Myanmar to, in accordance with Myanmar's national development plan and actual needs, discuss the construction of a Y-shaped China-Myanmar Economic Corridor from Yunnan, China in the north through China-Myanmar border to Mandalay in the south and then extending east and west respectively to the Yangon new city and the Kyaukphyu Special Economic Zone, forming an overall cooperation pattern with three-end support and of tripartite confrontation. This will help major projects along the road to connect with each other, promote each other and create an integrated effect, and will also help to promote more balanced development across Myanmar.

Wang Yi said that China-Myanmar Economic Corridor can open up new prospects for the joint construction of "Belt and Road" between China and Myanmar. It is hoped that experts and relevant departments of both sides could conduct scientific and specific discussions along this direction, especially taking the specific needs of Myanmar's development into consideration so as to form a viable cooperation program. Starting from the most urgent fields in Myanmar and the most-needed projects of the people in Myanmar, a new situation of mutually beneficial cooperation will be forged gradually.
