Xi Jinping Holds Telephone Talks with President Rodrigo Duterte of the Philippines

On May 3, 2017, President Xi Jinping held telephone talks with President Rodrigo Duterte of the Philippines.

Xi Jinping pointed out that I and Mr. President met twice last year and reached important consensus on improving and developing China-Philippines relations, which led to the comprehensive improvement in bilateral relations. At present, both sides are continuously deepening political mutual trust and comprehensively carrying out cooperation in various fields. A channel of dialogue and consultation on the South China Sea issue has also been set up. All these efforts, in line with the fundamental interests of the two countries and two peoples, have been fully affirmed by Asian neighbouring countries and the international community. Both sides should adhere to the general direction of bilateral good-neighborly and friendly cooperation and promote practical cooperation in various fields with all strength, so as to better benefit the two countries and their peoples.

Xi Jinping stressed that China appreciates the Philippines' key role in boosting cooperation in East Asia along the right direction as the rotating presidency of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). As a friendly and close neighbor of China, the Philippines is also an important partner of the "Belt and Road" construction. I welcome Mr. President to attend the Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation (BRF) in China, and look forward to meeting with Mr. President again at the appointed time.

Rodrigo Duterte expressed that he is happy to see the enhancement of bilateral friendship and solidarity and the rapid restoration and promotion of bilateral exchanges and cooperation in various areas at present. The Philippines is willing to make joint efforts with China to safeguard the improvement and development momentum of relations between both countries. As the rotating presidency of the ASEAN, the Philippines is ready to promote a better ASEAN-China relations, and intensify communication and cooperation in international and regional affairs. Rodrigo Duterte said that he looks forward to attending the BRF in China.

The two heads of state also exchanged views on the current situation on the Korean Peninsula. Xi Jinping stressed that China sticks to realizing denuclearization on the Korean Peninsula, upholding peace and stability of the Peninsula, and resolving the issue through dialogue and consultations. China advocates all relevant parties to exercise restraint and return to the right track of solving the issue with dialogue and negotiations at an early date. China is willing to see the ASEAN's active role in safeguarding regional peace and stability.
