President U Thein Sein of Myanmar Meets with Chinese State Councilor Yang Jiechi

On June 24, 2013, President U Thein Sein of Myanmar met with Chinese State Councilor Yang Jiechi in Nay Pyi Taw.

Yang Jiechi stressed that China and Myanmar are friendly neighbours traditionally. Both sides should firmly grasp the right direction of the bilateral relationship from a strategic and long-term perspective, well implement the important consensus reached between the heads of state of the two countries, continuously expand the common interest and deepen the China-Myanmar comprehensive strategic partnership. First, to maintain the exchanges of high-level visits and to enhance strategic communication. Second, to deepen practical cooperation, to ensure smooth implementation of major cooperation projects and to realize mutual benefit and win-win outcome to benefit the local people. Third, to promote people-to-people exchanges and to deepen mutual understanding and friendship between the two peoples. Fourth, to strengthen coordination on regional cooperation. As Myanmar will take the Alternate Chair of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) next year, China is willing to work with Myanmar to push forward the development of China-ASEAN relations.

Yang Jiechi stressed that China respects the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Myanmar and supports Myanmar to take a path of development that conforms to its national conditions. China hopes and supports for social stability, economic development and livelihood improvement in Myanmar. China supports the national reconciliation process of Myanmar, and hopes that the Myanmar government and the Kachin side could maintain the momentum of peace talks and sign a ceasefire agreement at an early date to realize lasting peace and stability in the northern part of Myanmar and along the China-Myanmar border. China is willing to continue to play a constructive role on this.

U Thein Sein said that China is a good neighbour and a good friend of Myanmar. The Myanmar side thanks China for having long provided valuable support and assistance and firmly supports China on issues concerning China's major core interests. Myanmar is now in a period of reform and development and hopes to learn from China for the successful experience. Myanmar is willing to work with China to well implement the Action Plan of China-Myanmar Comprehensive Strategic Cooperation Partnership and to strengthen good-neighbourly and friendly cooperation. The Myanmar side invites Chinese leader to visit Myanmar at an early date. The Myanmar side thanks China for helping Myanmar to develop economy and improve people's livelihood and welcomes investment from Chinese businesses. Myanmar is willing to create a favourable investment environment and to ensure the smooth operation of cooperation projects of the two countries. The Myanmar government is committed to domestic peace and stability and will continue to push forward the peace process to realize peace in the north at an early date and to ensure tranquility of border areas of the two countries.

During the visit, Yang Jiechi as well held talks with Vice President U Nyan Tun of Myanmar and met with Speaker of the House of Representatives of Myanmar U Shwe Mann. He was broadly engaged with people from the parliament, political parties and social sectors of Myanmar, exchanging views with them on developing relations between the two countries. Both sides as well signed the Action Plan of China-Myanmar Comprehensive Strategic Cooperation Partnership.
